In 2021, Jordan Díaz made the bold decision to forego competing in the Tokyo Olympics and left the Cuban training camp during a tour in Spain. Many were shocked, as it was not an easy choice, but the young triple jumper had a clear plan: to save his energy and shine at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

With patience, he awaited the right moment to legalize his status in Spain, partnering with his fellow countryman and former long jumper Iván Pedroso, who is now regarded as the best triple jump coach in the world. Once his naturalization process was completed in 2022, Díaz's career skyrocketed. Just a few weeks ago, he showcased his immense talent by achieving the third-best mark in history: 18.18 meters, at the European Athletics Championships.

On June 11, the 23-year-old Havana native also recorded the best result of the current season, coming just 11 centimeters short of the world record held by Britain's Jonathan Edwards. The historical ranking now stands as follows: Jonathan Edwards (18.29m), American Christian Taylor (18.21m), and Díaz, who in his debut representing Spain, has become the top favorite for the Paris Games.

Armed with these and other impressive credentials, Díaz will strive for success, though it will not come easy. He will face stiff competition from two fellow Cubans: Pedro Pablo Pichardo (Portugal), the reigning champion, and Andy Díaz (Italy), a two-time Diamond League winner.

They are part of a group of 21 Cuban athletes competing under different flags at these Olympics. Thirteen nations benefit from the talent of those born on the island, while two athletes are part of the Refugee Team: canoeist Fernando Dayán Jorge and weightlifter Ramiro Mora.
