The European Union (EU) has donated €500,000 to address urgent health needs for children, adolescents, and women of reproductive age in Holguín, Havana, and Sancti Spíritus.

This donation arrives amidst a severe health crisis in Cuba, exacerbated by a shortage of medications, a lack of healthcare professionals, and rising cases of dengue and Oropouche virus.

The economic aid will be managed by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), UNICEF, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The funding is expected to benefit nearly 30,000 people by enabling the purchase of medicines, supplies, and medical equipment, as well as improving access to essential sexual and reproductive health services.

The EU asserts that one of the goals is to strengthen neonatal services in the mentioned cities to ensure quality care for sick newborns, which includes training healthcare professionals in comprehensive neonatal care.

Since 1994, the EU has invested over €107.5 million in humanitarian projects in Cuba, focusing on emergencies and disaster preparedness. Isabel Brilhante Pedrosa, the EU Ambassador to Cuba, stated that these funds would support local capacity to provide essential healthcare services.
