The Cuban influencer Sulmira Martínez Pérez, known on social media as Salem, is set to face trial on August 12 in a Havana court for stating on Facebook that she would join street protests. The news was confirmed by journalist Mónica Baró, who received the information from Sulmira's mother, Norma Pérez, who has been vocal about her daughter's situation since her arrest.

Sulmira, 22, has been detained since January 10, 2023, for calling for protests on social media, urging Cubans to repeat the peaceful demonstrations of July 11, 2021. Following her arrest, she was initially imprisoned in Villa Marista, where she endured inhumane and degrading treatment before being transferred to the women's prison in El Guatao, where she remains.

In June, the Cuban Prosecutor's Office requested a combined sentence of 10 years in prison for the young woman, accusing her of contempt and crimes against the constitutional order. According to Martí Noticias, the requested sentence includes two years for contempt and nine years for crimes against the constitutional order, as well as deprivation of rights, asset forfeiture, and a travel ban, in accordance with articles 42.1, 52.1, and 59.1 of the Penal Code.

Despite having no prior criminal record, Sulmira has been under provisional detention since her arrest. Pérez stated that her daughter has been falsely accused of various charges, including some based on evidence obtained under duress and searches of her phone and home in Las Guásimas, a neighborhood in the Havana municipality of Arroyo Naranjo.
