Daughter of Carlos Massola Pleads for Help for Her Mother: "I'm Afraid She Will Join My Dad"

Thursday, August 8, 2024 by Olivia Torres

Jessenia Queralt Massola Sablón, daughter of the late Cuban actor Carlos Massola, has taken to social media to ask for help in obtaining penicillin for her mother, who urgently needs the antibiotic to treat lymphangitis.

"I'm making this post to ask for help for my mom, who is very sick, and I'm afraid she will join my dad. We really need help. Contact 53848662. The help is for penicillin," Jessenia wrote from her father's Facebook account.

"I don't have the financial means right now to buy it so my mom can get better," added Jessenia, sharing two photos on social media showing the condition of her mother’s legs, Bertha Mariela Sablón Roque.

In an emotional video also posted from her father's profile, Jessenia reiterated her plea for help, expressing her fear of losing her mother as well. She mentioned feeling ashamed to ask for help this way but explained she has no other means to access the needed medication.

In the comments section of both posts, several people expressed their willingness to help and asked for her address.

Struggles and Humble Living Conditions

In an interview with Cubanet in mid-July, Jessenia, who is 18 years old, revealed the humble conditions in which she and her mother live. They work as independent weavers. During the interview, Jessenia also discussed her own health issues, including dyslexia and hemolytic anemia, conditions her father had helped her manage by providing vitamins, other medications, and nutritional support.

Currently, the ashes of Carlos Massola, who passed away at the age of 62 from hypovolemic shock in his apartment in Cerro on the morning of July 3, are in his daughter's home. This was confirmed by Bertha Mariela Sablón Roque, Massola's former partner and Jessenia’s mother.

In recent years, Massola had become a controversial figure for the regime due to his denunciations of the Cuban government's abuses. His death was completely ignored by Cuban cultural authorities. No official cultural institutions or state media acknowledged his passing.

Despite the official silence, Massola was honored by many of his colleagues and loved by the public, who appreciated his courage in speaking out against the government’s inefficiency, human rights violations, and repression of freedoms.
