Drivers with vehicles bearing modified, vinyl-wrapped, or otherwise altered license plates could be fined $60 for a traffic violation, along with an additional county-imposed fee and the assignment of three points on their driver's license.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) stated in an official release that customized plates violate the legal requirements for license plates as set forth by Florida law. They emphasized that such modifications impede reflectivity, road safety, and potentially interfere with the yellow validation stickers.

"Driving on a public road with these altered plates is illegal and violates Section 320.061 of the Florida Statutes, which prohibits the unlawful alteration of a license plate," authorities highlighted.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) will be vigilant about this violation and will enforce the law. The department showcased examples of illegally altered plates in their statement.

Since 2020, citations for illegal plate alterations in Florida have surged by more than 98%. The FLHSMV noted that drivers who wish to have a customized plate can obtain one legally.

How to Legally Get a Customized License Plate in Florida

"Florida offers over 100 specialty plates for various organizations, and the proceeds from sales directly support the causes they represent. Additionally, personalized plates can be requested at a motor vehicle service center," they advised.

If a driver has altered their plate and cannot restore it to its original condition, they must apply for a new one at the local tax collector's office. FHP officers who find altered plates have the authority to confiscate them.
