Animal advocates celebrated on social media this Wednesday the dramatic transformation of a dog who found a new home after his owner could no longer feed him. The workers at a pizzeria took in the dog, giving him a fresh start.
Maurilia Tarano Tamayo shared the story of this dog in the Facebook group “SOS callejeros. Cuba,” detailing how the dog was put up for adoption because his owner was unable to provide for him. “We see today the transformation of Sultán, who was adopted by Rino's Pizza and Salsa Río at Parque Almendares,” she noted, highlighting the care and love the dog now receives.
“He lives a fully happy life now, loved by all the workers at the pizzeria. He is the spoiled and pampered favorite of everyone,” she added.
Enmanuel Castro Pla shared two photos in the same Facebook group. The first photo, taken on June 30, shows Sultán when he was first rescued. The second photo, taken this Wednesday, shows his remarkable transformation. “Look at the change in just over a month,” he said. “He went from being unable to stand up to eat to being the most hyperactive and happy dog you could ever see.”
The Challenges of Animal Protection in Cuba
Although animal protectors often make the difference between life and death for dogs and cats, their efforts are increasingly hindered by the ongoing crisis. The scarcity of resources has led more people to abandon or put their pets up for adoption because they cannot afford to feed them.
Migration has also impacted pets in Cuba, with some being left behind, sometimes with luck, in adoption.
Recently, an animal protector posted a unique adoption notice on social media, seeking someone to adopt a puppy under very specific conditions. The ad looked for someone without parole, who doesn’t live in a rented place, has no allergies, and won’t keep the dog on a rooftop.
Alexa Milena Durán Ruiz posted a message in the Facebook group “Somos tu voz,” explaining that the puppy had already been rescued once, but her brother wasn’t as fortunate and was killed. “So, we are looking for a special family that meets all the requirements so that Campanita can grow up very happy and surrounded by love,” she wrote.
