María de las Mercedes Ibarra Ibáñez, the great-granddaughter of Cuban patriot and journalist Juan Gualberto Gómez, passed away on Wednesday in Havana at the age of 86.

State-run Cuban media remember her as an "active defender of her great-grandfather's legacy" and a "steadfast ally of government-affiliated media." They also highlighted her determination to "preserve the historical memory of the Cuban nation and resist those who seek to divide it."

"Cubans must always remain united, as Martí and Juan Gualberto fought for," she said during a recent event commemorating the 170th birthday of her great-grandfather.

She is considered the last of the descendants of the fighter for Cuban independence during the republic period from 1901 to 1933.

The body of María de las Mercedes Ibarra Ibáñez will be cremated, as decided by her family, with funeral services to be announced soon through the official portal Cubaperiodistas.

The great-granddaughter of Juan Gualberto Gómez had turned 86 on February 27. She was visited by members of the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC) on dates close to the birth or death of the patriot.
