The United States Coast Guard (USCG) rescued a migrant on Friday who was traveling on a water bike near Cuba. The crew of the cutter Maple transferred the man to the Bahamas on Friday, after intercepting him 6 miles southwest of Cay Sal—northeast of Varadero—following detection by a crew, the entity reported in a statement on X.

The USCG warned that tropical storms can pose a significant risk to illegal maritime migration. Although the nationality of the migrant was not disclosed, it is not ruled out that he may be from Cuba, a country currently facing a severe migration crisis.

Recurring Attempts with Water Bikes

This is not the first time young people from the island have attempted to cross the Florida Straits to the United States using water bikes. In July 2022, the Coast Guard intercepted three young Cubans attempting to reach Florida on a water bike. They were eventually repatriated along with 77 Cuban rafters in an operation that involved multiple interceptions off the Florida Keys.

In December of the same year, three men who had left Cuba on a water bike were reported missing after not being found in a search conducted by authorities.

The desperation of Cuban migrants is a reflection of the difficult economic and political conditions on the island, posing serious risks for those who undertake these perilous journeys.

The USCG and other authorities continue to warn about the dangers associated with illegal maritime migration and ensure that intercepted migrants will be returned to their countries. In this case, the migrant was taken to the Bahamas because he was found in that country's territorial waters.
