Cuban boxer Loren Berto Alfonso claimed the silver medal for Azerbaijan in the 92 kg category at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Alfonso, who has been a standout throughout the tournament, was unable to overcome Uzbek Lazizbek Mullojonov in the final, losing decisively by a 5-0 score.

Despite Alfonso's efforts, his performance in the final was described as conservative compared to Mullojonov's aggression and dynamism. The Uzbek boxer appeared more active and comfortable in the ring, resulting in a clear advantage and the championship title in the 92 kg category.

The 29-year-old silver medalist had previously defeated Cuban Julio César La Cruz and his other compatriot, now-naturalized Spaniard Enmanuel Reyes, leaving them with bronze medals. This marks Alfonso's second Olympic medal, following his bronze in the previous Olympics.

Cuban boxing continues to be a dominant force on the Olympic stage. However, unlike previous competitions, many medalists from the island competed under different flags, highlighting the widespread crisis in Cuba that has forced its top athletes to seek citizenship in other countries. Born in Havana, Loren Berto is one of over 21 Cubans competing for other delegations in the Olympics.

Now naturalized as an Azerbaijani, Alfonso boasts an impressive track record with his adopted country. In 2019, he secured fifth place in the World Championships in Yekaterinburg, Russia, in the 75 kg division. He then achieved one of his most significant milestones by winning an Olympic bronze in Tokyo 2020 in the 81 kg category, after losing to fellow Cuban Arlen López.

In 2021, Loren Berto reached new heights by becoming the world champion in the 86 kg category at the World Boxing Championships, a well-deserved accolade following his journey to the top after being overlooked in his native Cuban boxing scene.

The Cuban-trained boxer has shown immense talent and progression, as evidenced by his swift rise to the world elite shortly after winning the Olympic bronze in Tokyo. He solidified his position by achieving global glory in Serbia, a tournament that marked his definitive ascent to the top tier of international boxing.

In the semifinals of the 2021 World Boxing Championships, Alfonso defeated his compatriot Herich Ruiz in a bout that featured a poignant display of respect towards his opponent, coaches, and the country of his birth. At the end of the fight, he raised Herich's hand, approached the corner, and greeted the Cuban coaches, placing his hand over the flag on one of their chests.
