A driver has urged those traveling through Central Havana to stay vigilant against a behavior that could be a new strategy for theft.
An anonymous participant in the popular Facebook group Accidentes Buses & Camiones recounted that on Friday morning around 7:50 a.m., he was taking his mother to work when, at the corner of Industria and San Lázaro streets, two individuals stopped him, demanding to see his license, claiming he was driving in the wrong direction.
"Two individuals almost jumped in front of me, partially showing an ID card upside down and from their pants pocket, demanding my license because I was supposedly going the wrong way. Needless to say, I sped off and left them shouting and demanding the license," explained the driver.
"Firstly, they didn't identify themselves; they only had an upside-down ID card. Secondly, I wasn’t going the wrong way. Thirdly, they were dressed in civilian clothes. It was clear they were looking for an easy target to snatch a wallet. That's what I concluded in five seconds," the driver added.
In the final part of his post, the driver who experienced this unusual incident firsthand urged other drivers never to take out their wallets to show documents unless those asking for them present a valid ID and are in uniform.
"They are desperate and don't know what to come up with next," he concluded.
In the comments section, several netizens thanked him for the advice and agreed that criminals have become very creative.
