Jordan clinched the Olympic gold medal in triple jump, securing a historic victory for Spain's medal tally. In the competition held last Friday, the naturalized Spaniard outperformed his fellow competitors Pedro Pichardo and Andy Díaz, who represent Portugal and Italy, respectively.
At just 23 years old, Díaz achieved a stunning jump of 17.86 meters, dethroning the reigning Olympic champion Pichardo, who recorded a jump of 17.84 meters. In an interview with Radio y Televisión Española (rtve), Jordan revealed that Spanish authorities informed him at the last minute about a change in his return flight to ensure his presence at the closing ceremony.
“They told me, 'We've changed your flight to the 12th,' and I was like, 'But why?' The response was, 'You are the flag bearer,' and I thought, 'Well, if it's worth staying for that, then it's okay,'” he commented.
The Olympic champion and protégé of the legendary jumper Iván Pedroso expressed his joy at receiving this additional recognition. “That's super important,” he concluded.
Joining Díaz will be María Pérez, a Spanish runner who earned two medals: gold in the mixed relay walk and silver in the 20 km individual walk.
