A fire on Monday in Santiago de Cuba destroyed a home occupied by a person living in poverty. The blaze was quickly contained due to the proximity of a liquefied gas cylinder sales point.

Journalist Yosmany Mayeta reported on Facebook that the fire completely destroyed a residence in the Nuevo Van Van neighborhood in Altamira, with no injuries or fatalities reported. "The home was located on a small farm between Punta Gorda Road and the Touristic Road," the journalist noted.

Mayeta added that according to local residents, the fire was caused by burning garbage, which spread to the nearby home. However, this version of events still needs confirmation.

Mayeta highlighted that the Nuevo Van Van neighborhood is filled with precarious homes built from tin and wood scavenged from local dumpsites.
