Cubana in Spain: "I Had to Learn Many New Things to Survive and Sustain Myself"

Tuesday, August 13, 2024 by Abigail Marquez

A young Cuban woman living in Spain shared a new video on TikTok discussing her experience in the European country. In her account, Lisi—known as @lisandrita95 on the platform—talked about living the "Spanish dream" and highlighted both the challenges and blessings she has encountered along the way, always noting that she speaks about her own dream and not "anyone else's, because it's different for everyone."

Overcoming Job Market Challenges

One of the main topics Lisi addressed in her video was the difficulty of finding a job upon arriving in Spain. "Today, I can't complain because, thank God, I have a job that allows me to sustain myself and live without asking anyone for anything," she said.

She also touched on the lack of patience some people have when teaching newcomers: "I know no one has to know about my life, and I don't have to talk about it, but have you never had to start over for the first time? Have you never had to learn something from scratch for the first time?" asked this young Cuban, who explained that despite having a university degree in Cuba, she had to learn many new things.

"Today, I'm not practicing my degree, so to live and sustain myself, I had to learn many new things," she said in her video, where she also shared anecdotes about developing new skills and knowledge, such as making mojitos and sangrías, something she previously only enjoyed as a consumer in Cuba.

Building a Supportive Community

Despite the initial challenges, Lisi has found a community of supportive people: "I have a bunch of acquaintances that I care about a lot, and I hope they don't get upset if they see this video because I care about them all very much."

Prior to this video, Lisi had shared another one about the unpleasant experience she had at her first job. She also recounted the cultural shock that took her by surprise upon arrival.
