Animal protectors in Havana announced on social media this Monday that they have successfully raised the necessary funds for the surgery of Sara, one of the dogs that survived the explosion at the Saratoga Hotel.

Activist Teresa Díaz shared on Facebook that they collected 5,000 pesos to cover the operation for the dog, who has a tumor on her face, as well as the transportation needed for the procedure. "Thank you so much to everyone who helped so quickly, it’s incredible the power we have when united," the activist noted, adding that the procedure is scheduled for Friday. "We will keep everyone updated," she added.

Sara was not the only dog to survive the explosion at the Saratoga Hotel in Havana's historic center. Sultán, also rescued alive from the rubble of the building adjacent to the hotel, returned safely to the grandchildren of his owner. The dog survived for more than 48 hours under the debris.

However, the efforts of the dogs were crucial in rescuing the victims of the tragedy. Five Labrador dogs trained in rescue operations were a key link in the search for survivors following the explosion.

In statements to the official website Cubadebate, rescuers and trainers affirmed that the mission involved Dianko, Tito, Xila, Yomy, and Rocky. Rocky has international experience, having participated in the rescue operations after the 2016 Ecuador earthquake. The dogs received recognition and, above all, the gratitude of the survivors, especially Dianko, who suffered an injury in the collapsed building's debris.
