A group of former students from the Instituto Preuniversitario Vocacional de Ciencias Exactas (IPVCE) in Ciego de Ávila banded together to buy a house for their retired teacher, Fermín Évora. Through a GoFundMe campaign, students scattered across various provinces of the island and different parts of the world contributed the necessary funds to secure a decent home for Mr. Évora, explained Facebook user Guillermo Rodríguez Sánchez.

After overcoming numerous bureaucratic hurdles, the teacher now enjoys his new residence in the town of Patria, Morón, chosen by him after considering several options. The project was spearheaded by Soliet Lorenzo Delgado and Yunet Rodríguez Mejías, who, despite preferring to stay out of the spotlight, were pivotal in making this noble cause a reality, highlighted the user.

The post reflects not only on the plight of thousands of elderly people in Cuba who face serious housing issues but also on the lasting impact a dedicated teacher can have on their students. "And I start to think... how much good must a teacher have done for their students to remember them in such a way and be moved by affection to come together en masse. How much integrity and impeccable character must remain in their memories for the mobilization to be so overwhelming," he pondered.

The campaign detailed that "Mr. Évora, despite being ill and retired, lives in a rural area of Ciego de Ávila where transportation is scarce," and had to "walk 3 kilometers each morning and evening, rain or shine, to reach the road where he waits for the bus that takes him to the school where he is rehired."

It added that the distance made it difficult for him to access hospitals, medications, food, and the resources needed to meet his basic needs. The teacher has no children or family living with him, prompting the students of the 16th graduating class to initiate the campaign to buy him a house near the city of Morón. The initiative managed to raise nearly five thousand dollars, and the teacher now owns the property.
