A fourth person involved in the almendrón accident that occurred on August 10 in Mayarí, Holguín province, has died. This update was shared on social media by journalist Emilio Rodríguez Pupo on Monday.
The most recent victim was Maritza Paredes Martínez, aged 57, who lived in Cabonico, Mayarí. According to the report, Paredes Martínez—who was treated at the Holguín Clinical-Surgical Hospital—was in critical condition after suffering a "second-time splenic rupture" and having fluid in her abdominal cavity.
Initially, Rodríguez Pupo had reported that Maritza Paredes had a "pelvic and femur fracture," but her condition appears to have worsened subsequently.
The accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday when a Chevrolet vehicle collided with a tree for unknown reasons on the road connecting the neighborhoods of Arroyo Blanco and El Solibano.
The initial impact killed Yendri Saldaña Díaz (40 years old), and Alexander Santiago González Vera (52 years old), while six others were injured, including two children.
The mother of the minors—identified as Yanet Rojas Ramírez—was transported to the Lucía Íñiguez Clinical-Surgical Hospital, where she died a few hours later after suffering abdominal trauma and undergoing surgery.
Her children, Lázaro Ávila Rojas (8 years old) and Lisbeth Ávila Rojas (6 years old), are being treated at the Holguín Pediatric Hospital by their father and an aunt. Both are out of danger, although the girl suffered a femur fracture that will require medical follow-up.
The other survivors of this incident are Dailín Machado and Yurixan Ortiz Benítez. Dailín Machado has a cranial trauma and occipital fracture, and doctors are evaluating a new surgery. Yurixan Ortiz Benítez, 34 years old and a resident of Levisa, has a rib fracture that is not life-threatening and is being treated at the Mayarí hospital.
Experts from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) are investigating the causes that led to the accident, although no official information has been released so far.
In a recent incident, a motorcycle police officer died last Friday in another traffic accident in Holguín, this time in the municipality of Sagua de Tánamo.
