A Cuban citizen raised concerns this Wednesday about the exorbitant price of eggs in the market, using humor to illustrate his point by showcasing a table covered in eggshells and ironically claiming he had invested nearly a dollar in them.

Manuel Viera, in a Facebook post, expressed his frustration by showing a table filled with eggshells, commenting, “And here I am! Waiting for the ladies with creative recipes to find some way to use these eggshells. After paying more than 100 pesos for each one... something has to be done with them.”

Viera's ironic post highlights the desperation and ingenuity with which citizens are trying to cope with the economic crisis on the island.

Widespread Complaints on Social Media

This Wednesday, the profile Edmundo Dantés Junior also took to social media to complain about the high price that eggs have reached in the informal market.

“Yesterday I finally found eggs for 4,500, and by the evening they were already 5,000,” he noted sarcastically, pointing out that the rampant inflation affects essential products such as eggs.

Another person using humor to reflect the soaring price of eggs is comedian Otto Ortiz.

With his characteristic wit, the Cuban comedian reported in May that a carton of eggs in Havana could cost up to 3,500 pesos.

The rampant inflation, which erodes the purchasing power of Cuban families, will even change popular sayings, the comedian claimed in a video posted on Facebook.

In July, the cost of a carton of eggs in Havana surpassed the country's minimum wage, reaching an average of 2,225 pesos. However, just a month later, the price had significantly increased.

According to an updated list at that time, which showed food prices in the capital sold through social media, a 30-egg carton could be found for between 2,000 and 2,500 pesos, averaging 2,225 pesos.
