In the first seven months of 2024, the eastern Cuban province of Granma has seen a concerning spike in traffic accidents. Major Ernesto González Rodríguez, the chief officer of the provincial Traffic Department, informed La Demajagua newspaper that as of August 1, there have been 200 accidents, resulting in 22 fatalities and 297 injuries.

The numbers surpass last year's figures across all metrics. The municipalities most affected are Jiguaní, Yara, Manzanillo, and Bayamo, where both national and provincial roads show a high concentration of incidents.

High-Risk Areas Identified

González Rodríguez highlighted the dangerous stretch between the urban and national bus bases in Bayamo, as well as the route between La Pedrera and Entronque de Bueycito. These areas have seen the highest number of fatalities. He also emphasized the need for extra caution in areas like the Manzanillo ring road and the highway to Las Tunas, where heavy vehicle traffic, narrow roads, and pedestrian crossings create hazardous conditions.

Authorities attribute the main causes of these accidents to the disregard for right of way, driver distractions such as mobile phone use, and improper overtaking. The vehicles most involved in these incidents include mopeds, cars, and bicycles.

In 2023, a total of 729 people lost their lives due to traffic accidents in Cuba. Despite 2023 having the fewest number of accidents with 8,556 incidents, 5,938 people were injured, and the death toll increased compared to 2022.
