Sunday, August 18, 2024 by Albert Rivera

On Saturday night, a significant explosion was reported on General Carrillo Street in the El Carmen neighborhood of Remedios, Villa Clara, with no casualties or injuries reported. “On the night of this Saturday, the 17th, an explosion occurred in a home located on General Carrillo Avenue in #NuestroRemedios. The population is informed that there are no injuries,” wrote the administrators of the Facebook page “Nuestro Remedios.”

The post also noted that forces from the Ministry of the Interior, firefighters, and personnel from the SIUM were present at the scene. The source added that the causes of the incident were under investigation.

However, Niover Licea, on his Instagram profile, indicated that the explosion was caused by an electric generator located on the third floor of the home, alongside some fuel barrels, which was in use due to a power outage in the neighborhood.

Several comments on the "Nuestro Remedios" post also confirmed this situation. One user pointed out that “there were no serious injuries, but the roofs of two nearby homes and the one affected by the generator explosion were damaged.” Another user described it as “a massive explosion, like thunder.”

A local resident narrated that she lived a block away from the incident and “my roof shook, I was lying down, and dirt fell from the ceiling.” Another individual mentioned that there were two babies sleeping in the house at the time of the explosion. “I heard the explosion, but I thought it was a mortar or something like that,” explained another user.

Last Wednesday, an electric motorcycle explosion in a home in the Luyanó neighborhood of the Diez de Octubre municipality in Havana resulted in four deaths, including a year-old baby, and a thirteen-year-old girl seriously injured. Neighbors recounted that in the house where the explosion occurred, located at 203 Marqués de la Torre Street, there were two electric motorcycles. One of them was left charging overnight and exploded shortly after seven in the morning.

Despite neighbors’ efforts to rescue the residents, the entrance door was locked with a gate and padlock, making access impossible. “They were trapped inside,” lamented one of the rescuers.
