Cuban authorities have announced the ongoing repair work on the Fifth Avenue Tunnel in Havana, which will remain partially closed until August 31. The Minister of Transportation, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, detailed on his Facebook page that the work includes pothole repairs, cleaning, and unclogging of the three grid battery systems, as well as tiling damaged walls.

The lighting system will be inspected to determine the need for new fixtures, and repairs will be made to walls, beams, and curbs. Traffic lights and vertical signs will be adjusted, and reflectors will be installed. The official also noted the necessity of repairing the metal grids located in pedestrian crossings.

The work commenced on July 14 and is expected to be completed by Saturday, August 31. Repairs in the Playa-to-Plaza de la Revolución direction will continue until August 21 and will begin in the opposite direction on August 23.

Alternative Routes and Traffic Management

To ensure mobility during these days, drivers are encouraged to use the following alternative routes:

  • From Playa to Plaza: Avenues 41, 31, 7th to Línea.
  • From Plaza to Playa: Streets Línea, 23, 31, and 41.

Pedestrians are informed that the tunnel will remain open for crossing in the direction where maintenance work is not taking place. The Fifth Avenue Tunnel connects the municipalities of Playa and Plaza de la Revolución.

The repair work is being carried out by the Basic Unit for Tunnel Operations, the ENCONAT microenterprise, and other entities. Rodríguez Dávila emphasized that "it does not have the complexity of the work done on the Havana Bay Tunnel."
