The young Cuban, Léster Domínguez, who has been unable to walk since he was violently assaulted in March of last year in Holguín, remains optimistic about his progress.
According to his father, Dennis Domínguez, Léster is in good health and continues to stay in Havana, eagerly awaiting the first week of September to be re-admitted to the Julito Díaz Hospital in Boyeros, where he began a new treatment for his recovery in June.
"He is very optimistic about his recovery, experiencing more sensitivity and movement in his knees and ankles. I think we still need to strengthen his core and improve his posture," Dennis detailed on his Facebook page.
Léster started a new therapy on July 1, coincidentally his birthday. He moved to Havana to try different techniques for his recovery, starting this new journey on his 19th birthday.
"Léster believes that in two months he might start walking. We hope that his faith becomes reality with the resources available at the hospital," his father mentioned at the time.
Léster decided to continue his rehabilitation in the capital after spending a year and three months without being able to take a step. During this period, he has gained more strength in his arms and legs and has sensitivity throughout his body, which gives him and his father hope.
At the end of May, Dennis revealed that he was trying to get Léster admitted to Julito Díaz to begin any therapy that would help him walk again.
During those days, Léster asked his father to take him out of the country, realizing that Cuba lacks the necessary conditions for his recovery.
"He sees that everything is complicated by the power outages in Cuba and the lack of necessary conditions for his recovery. He told me the best way I could help him is by taking him out of the country," stated his dedicated father, who has tirelessly supported him throughout this time.
At 17, Léster suffered a violent assault on March 22 of last year, which left him with severe injuries.
More than a year later, after much effort and dedication, he has overcome many of the consequences of that attack, such as the pressure sore on his back, and he no longer needs a mechanical ventilator to breathe, but he still cannot stand.
"We are working to strengthen his upper and lower limbs, but there are deficiencies in his spine that need to be corrected for him to achieve a proper standing posture," added Dennis.
