Wednesday, August 21, 2024 by Isabella Rojas

The Cuban Little Leaguers bid farewell to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania this Tuesday after a surprising loss to the young representatives from Matamoros, Mexico.

Despite entering the final inning with a four-to-one lead, the Mexican team only needed that last frame to surpass the Cubans at Volunteer Stadium. Two home runs, one with two runners on base and another driving in two runs, dashed the Cuban team's hopes of advancing in this World Series.

Cuba ended the game with four runs, six hits, and one error, while Mexico tallied six runs, six hits, and no errors.

Deivy Hernández started for Cuba, allowing one run and striking out five batters over four and two-thirds innings. However, the Mexican team showed no mercy to closer Denis Zamora, hitting a home run by Antonio Guerrero with two men on base to tie the game, followed by another homer by catcher Ulises Ortiz with one runner on.

The previous day, the Cubans suffered their first tournament loss, falling 10-2 to the Asia-Pacific representatives, Chinese Taipei.

The tournament's double-elimination rule states that any team losing twice must leave the competition, which features 20 teams, half of which are from the host nation. Thus, the known Bombarderos de Santa Clara bid adieu to the event, cheered on by supporters both in the United States and back home in Cuba.
