Reactions to Otaola's Loss in Miami-Dade Mayoral Election

Wednesday, August 21, 2024 by Amelia Soto

The Miami-Dade mayoral election on Tuesday resulted in a victory for the incumbent, Daniella Levine Cava, who secured 60% of the votes. Cuban candidate Alexander Otaola was relegated to third place with just 12% of the vote, sparking a wave of reactions, especially from artists who have had heated arguments with the former candidate in the past.

Among those expressing their joy at the outcome are comedian Alexis Valdés, Dominican influencer Destino, TV host Carlucho, reggaeton artist Yomil Hidalgo, and singer El Niño y La Verdad. Many other Cuban artists have also shown their approval by liking posts and adding heart emojis on Instagram, indicating their satisfaction with the controversial influencer's defeat.

However, not all responses have been mocking. Comedian Cuqui la Mora and YouTuber Eliécer Ávila have expressed their displeasure over the election results.

Otaola, who not only trailed behind Levine Cava but also Miami Lakes Republican Mayor Manny Cid, who garnered 22% of the votes, has rejected the election outcome. The Cuban influencer has called for a vote-by-vote recount, questioning the integrity of the results.

Summary of Reactions on Social Media

Alexis Valdés

Alexis Valdés used his character Cristinito to comment humorously on the situation.

Carlucho

"No, no, no! I want a recount, I want ballot by ballot. If Venezuela has a Corina, Miami has a Corín Tellado," joked Carlucho. Some criticized him for mixing the sensitive issue of Venezuelan elections with Miami's electoral contest. Undeterred, Carlucho made a second post, stating, "Recount of the same story."

Yomil

"I wanted my mayor Oty to win, but I just saw he got the fewest votes. I was looking forward to his dictatorial mandate, asere," wrote the reggaeton artist on his Instagram stories. It should be noted, however, that Otaola was not the least voted candidate in the election.

El Niño y La Verdad

More discreetly, singer Emilio Frías posted multiple laughing emojis next to Otaola's campaign photo.

Cuqui la Mora

While La Diosa has remained silent, comedian Cuqui la Mora wrote a lengthy statement beginning with, "Miami digs its own grave." She lamented that "the hope for a city free of communists, destruction, lack of values, lack of empathy, ignorance, disrespect, crime, double standards, ignored laws, and all that has increased and not interested the one who will again take the mayor's office" has been buried.

Cuqui la Mora added, "Our fight continues, with more strength and hope, because many of us prioritize dignity and the desire for a free Cuba and a Miami that represents America and doesn't favor the dictatorship, extending its stay in power." She praised Otaola and his campaign team for their "great work" and concluded, "There are only two sides in this fight, dignity and complicity, and everyone knows which side they're on."

Eliécer Ávila

Eliécer Ávila expressed his disappointment with the election results and hinted at possibly moving out of the county due to the re-election of Democrat Daniella Levine Cava. "Miami-Dade should be the most anti-communist county in the U.S. More victims of continental dictatorships live here than anywhere else in the country. If you tell me that nearly 70% of exiles in this city vote Democrat and the only anti-communist program gets 12%, I'm moving out of Miami-Dade," Ávila stated.

He defended Otaola's right to request a recount and seriously considered relocating if Levine Cava's victory is confirmed. "I don't want to contribute my taxes to this county. I have other houses in Florida, and I'm thinking about moving," he explained.
