Several young Cubans distributed meals to the homeless in various streets of Santiago de Cuba this Wednesday. "Someone called me offering bread and packets of juice for breakfast for our friends on the streets, insisting on remaining anonymous," wrote independent writer Yasser Sosa Tamayo in a Facebook post titled "Medals Worn on the Soul."

Sosa Tamayo, who never identified his benefactor, described the emotional impact of the encounter: "When I went to collect the juices, my heart sank upon seeing the humility with which she lives. She, perhaps needing help herself, decided to support me in helping others."

He added that this person "taught me a profound lesson in immense humility and the greatness of certain actions." He also expressed gratitude, saying, "I know God will reward you abundantly, my friend. Truly, it is more often the poor who happily share their bread than the rich who give from their abundance."

Sosa Tamayo thanked several contributors for their support, especially those who aided the most vulnerable living on the streets, deprived of proper care and shelter. "We do it with all the love in the world for those on the streets. I won't gain anything material, but helping fills my soul and feels incredibly gratifying," he affirmed. Several photos shared online documented the distribution effort.

Growing Support Amid Economic Challenges

A group of young Cubans has played a significant role in supporting the homeless and impoverished, a population segment that is growing on the island due to rising inflation and low wages.

Earlier this year, Massiel Carrasquero Ramos, a young Cuban, performed an act of goodwill on Three Kings' Day by distributing caldosa with friends to vulnerable individuals in Havana. Similarly, young residents in the province of Ciego de Ávila engaged in a noble act by delivering food to homeless individuals who expressed gratitude for the gesture.

Artist Ozzie from Ciego de Ávila was the face of this delivery effort. He explained that the primary intention was to help those on the streets and to show, especially to older generations, that many young people are willing to take such actions. During his journey, Ozzie respectfully approached mostly elderly individuals sleeping on benches, sidewalks, and open building floors, providing them with pizza and a cup of juice.

Another notable action involved a group of Cubans who distributed food to vulnerable elderly people in Havana.
