Nine people, two of them seriously, were injured in a massive accident that occurred Wednesday morning in the municipality of Palma Soriano, Santiago de Cuba.

The incident took place on the National Highway, between Irijoa and Arroyo Blanco, where a bus from Transtur Habana, carrying 40 Cuban passengers from the capital to Santiago, collided with a trailer belonging to EMGEF Generación de Energía Eléctrica Grupo Electrógenos FUEL-OIL, which was heading to Contramaestre.

Miguel Ángel Díaz Núñez, the director of Public Health in the province, reported that nine people were injured.

The bus driver, Henry Yanes Díaz, 36, a resident of El Cotorro, Havana, is in critical condition and his life is at risk. Meanwhile, passenger Ricardo Matos Reyes, 58, from Guantánamo City, is seriously injured but not in life-threatening condition. The other seven passengers sustained minor injuries. All are receiving care at the Juan Bautista General Hospital in Palma Soriano. Given the risks involved in transferring them to Santiago de Cuba, the two seriously injured individuals are being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of that facility.

When feasible, all patients will be evacuated to Santiago de Cuba for continued medical attention.

Beatriz Johnson Urrutia, the highest authority of the Party and Government in the municipality, along with officials from the Ministry of the Interior and Public Health, visited the accident site and are currently at the healthcare institution.
