Work-related fatalities in Cuba increased in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, even though the total number of incidents decreased by 3.8% during the same timeframe.

Although the absolute number of fatalities only rose by two people—25 deaths this year versus 23 in 2023—the percentage increase is significant at 8.7%.

The report titled Work Protection: Selected Indicators, published this Monday by the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI), detailed that between January and June of this year, 851 workplace accidents were recorded. This represents 34 fewer incidents than the 885 that occurred during the same period in 2023.

The sectors most affected by these fatalities were Transportation, Storage, and Communications with six deaths; Agriculture, Livestock, Hunting, and Forestry with four fatalities; and Manufacturing Industries, Electricity, Gas, and Water Supply, and Commerce, each with three deaths.

In May, the ONEI reported that the number of workplace accidents in 2023 had decreased compared to 2022, although the number of fatalities remained unchanged.

Last year concluded with a total of 1,491 workplace accidents, representing a 10.6% decline compared to the previous year.
