The father of young Amanda, whose story has deeply moved thousands of Cubans both on the island and abroad, is celebrating his birthday this Thursday. Emmanuel Lemus, the dedicated and loving father who did not hesitate to donate a portion of his liver to save his daughter, turns another year older today with the joy of seeing his daughter healthy and living a normal life.

Cuban activist Yamilka Laffita (also known as Lara Crofs) shared a heartfelt birthday message on Facebook, recalling Emmanuel's and his wife Mila's life back in January when Amanda, just two years old, was almost abandoned by the Cuban healthcare system.

A Father's Sacrifice

"The sacrifice Emmanuel made was tremendous. He cooked, cleaned, organized, and went to the hospital up to three times a day. He is an incredible father and husband. I saw him suffer, filled with anger due to the evasive and empty responses from our country. His daughter was teetering between life and death, and he did whatever was necessary to save her, even risking his own life," detailed Lara.

Lara described Emmanuel as a "super intelligent," "affectionate" man who "knows how to cook." She went on to say, "We had many conversations about the day Amanda would be well, how everything would be for them, and that day has come, my friend. Today, you can celebrate as you deserve. I'm sure the most precious gift is what you have in your hands, your daughter and wife. Good people who strive and do not give up in the face of obstacles are rewarded."

This week, Lara Crofs shared a photo confirming Amanda's recovery after undergoing a liver transplant in Spain on March 15. She reported that the little girl is now living a normal life with her parents in the Iberian nation.

"Mila and Emmanuel now live with the peace and happiness of seeing their daughter grow as healthily as possible," wrote the activist. She added that Amanda has regular hospital check-ups, "but she has started to live."

"Mila tells me that Amanda is very hyperactive and always laughing; she is happy. She can sit up on her own, eats very well, and if everything continues as it is, she may start walking next year," Laffita added.

"Amanda was the child who brought hope back to many Cubans both within and outside of Cuba. The solidarity and support this family received were touching and immensely beautiful. The life of this little girl was the cry of a united Cuban civil society, beyond ideologies, creeds, and races," stated Crofs.

On July 15, exactly four months after the liver transplant, a photo emerged showing Amanda continuing to make progress.

Struggle for Amanda's Life

The fight to save Amanda's life began in January 2024, when her mother made a viral post publicly apologizing to her daughter for bringing her into a country where the healthcare system could not meet her medical needs.

Amanda suffered from a severe liver disease and urgently needed a transplant, but the limitations in Cuba prevented her from receiving the operation. Therefore, a humanitarian visa was requested for her.

After several weeks of campaigns supported by activists, independent media, and generous Cubans, the necessary funds were raised for Amanda and her parents to travel to Spain, where a hospital had accepted her case.

In March, Amanda arrived in Madrid, where doctors were shocked by the severe deterioration of her health and noted that precious time had been lost in addressing her illness.

On March 15, Amanda underwent a liver transplant, a successful operation that marked the beginning of her recovery. Despite some setbacks and complications, the little girl ultimately overcame them.
