Independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta shared images of the Transtur Habana bus that was involved in an accident on Wednesday in Santiago de Cuba, which left nine people injured, two of them critically. The bus collided with a truck on the National Highway and subsequently crashed into a house. On Wednesday, firefighters removed the vehicle from the scene.

The photos and a video posted by Mayeta reveal the extensive damage to the bus, particularly at the front. Among the nine injured, the most seriously hurt is the driver, identified as Henry Yanes Díaz, aged 36, who is in critical condition and fighting for his life.

Details of the Incident

According to the reporter, the bus was transporting passengers from José Martí National Airport to Santiago de Cuba because their flight was canceled due to a mechanical issue that grounded the plane in the eastern city. The passengers left the capital in three buses rented by Cubana de Aviación; the first of these was the one that crashed between the municipalities of Contramaestre and Palma Soriano.

"The buses designated for this transport began departing after 6:20 PM on Tuesday from Terminal 1 of José Martí Airport. They couldn't leave earlier because they were in the workshop and then needed to refuel," the report details.

It was also noted that the severely injured driver, after leaving the workshop, only had enough time to go home, shower since he was covered in grease, and head to the airport to pick up the first group of passengers, which included families with children and elderly people.

So far, the authorities have not provided further information on the condition of the injured driver, who resides in El Cotorro, Havana. Meanwhile, passenger Ricardo Matos Reyes, 58, from Guantánamo, is reported to be in serious condition but not life-threatening. The other seven injured suffered minor injuries. All were treated at the Juan Bautista General Hospital in Palma Soriano, with the two critically injured in intensive care.

According to Beatriz Johnson Urrutia, the first secretary of the Party in the province, the Transtur bus was carrying 40 Cuban passengers when it collided with a truck belonging to EMGEF Generación de energía eléctrica Grupo electrógenos FUEL-OIL, which was headed toward Contramaestre. The causes of the accident have not yet been disclosed.
