Cuban Mother Seeks Justice for Son's Tragic Death in Miami Traffic Accident

Friday, August 30, 2024 by Abigail Marquez

Annetta García, a Cuban-born mother, is demanding justice for the death of her eldest son, who tragically died in a traffic accident in early August.

On August 6, 22-year-old Alexander Jesús Moya allegedly fell from his scooter and was subsequently hit by a vehicle. The incident took place near the northbound entrance ramp to Interstate 95 from U.S. 441.

However, García is outraged that the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) officer who informed her of her son's death merely stated that he had fallen off his scooter and sustained fatal injuries.

"This is a pain I don't want anyone else to experience," García, visibly distressed, told the local press. "I want justice. Why did he leave him there like a dog? [...] I know nothing will bring him back, but I need to know exactly what happened," she emphasized.

A witness recorded a video showing Moya on the ground and a driver standing nearby after hitting him.

García said that after watching the video, she realized the FHP officer had lied by omission, and she felt betrayed both by the FHP and the driver, who later fled the scene.

"I understand accidents happen, and I forgive him for that, but I don't forgive him for leaving him there," García stated.

"He was special. He was my son, my best friend. I was his best friend. I had him at a young age, so we grew up together in a way," she lamented.

Tragically, García is the wife of Cuban activist and dissident Esteban Rodríguez, who has also demanded justice for his stepson on social media.

"I ask all my friends and everyone to share this news. The driver who hit my wife's eldest son fled the scene. This coward needs to be found; our family demands justice and action against this coward. #Justice," Esteban wrote.

"We will uncover the truth with the help of all our friends and the media. The responsible party must be found, and the police need to do their job. The person who hit the child must pay," he added.

In another post, the family indicated that the medical examiner determined the young man died from blunt force injury, suggesting he was killed by a truck.

"I have a witness who saw the driver talking to another truck driver who was also there before leaving. I need this news to be shared. Now I know the cause of death; I need the heartless son of a bitch who caused it and left him there like a dog to be found. Everyone who knew Alex knows he didn't deserve to die like this," the post reads.

Annetta García, known as Anny Rodríguez on Facebook, has made heartbreaking posts in recent days, expressing her pain and pleading for justice.
