Mother of Five and Pregnant with Twins Struggles in Extreme Poverty in Havana

Saturday, August 31, 2024 by Felix Ortiz

A Cuban mother named Solange Romero, residing in La Guinera, Arroyo Naranjo, has appealed for assistance amidst a desperate housing situation. The young woman, who has five children and is pregnant with twins, lives in extreme poverty in a wooden house that floods every time it rains.

In a live Facebook broadcast, she explained that each time it rains, she has to climb onto the bed with her children until the storm passes, due to leaks in the roof of her dilapidated home. Despite being registered in the demographic plan since 2021 for being a mother of five, she has received no concrete assistance or solution to her vulnerable situation.

"It is very hard to climb onto the bed with your children not knowing what to do; there's no way out," she lamented.

Recurring Cases of Poverty Among Cuban Mothers

The case of Solange is not unique in Cuba. In January of this year, another similar case moved dozens of Cubans when the story of Yuliet, a mother of seven, became public. Yuliet, 31, lived in deplorable conditions in the province of Camagüey, without sufficient resources to feed or clothe her children, and with the entire family sleeping in one bed.

Dozens of Cuban mothers live with multiple children in extreme poverty, while the regime remains incapable of providing them with a dignified life. Despite authorities promising to prioritize mothers with more than three children in solving housing problems, the reality is that many women like Solange and Yuliet continue to live in unacceptable conditions, without access to basic resources or any solutions in sight.
