Sunday, September 1, 2024 by Isabella Rojas

One of the injured in the recent accident at the Cienfuegos Cement Factory has experienced new health complications. Dionel Figueroa Calunga, aged 52, who was reported in critical condition upon arrival at the hospital with 70% burns, has developed heart and lung issues.

In a medical update on Saturday at 6:00 PM, Dr. Soraya Izaguirre Hernández, head of the burn unit at Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima Provincial Hospital, explained that Figueroa Calunga showed signs of hemodynamic instability, meaning inadequate blood flow to organs.

Three other hospitalized victims are showing favorable progress. Two of them received necessary treatments without complications. Two injured workers gave their first statements to the state press.

Carlos Aguilar Sabina, 33, who has 12% burns, is reported to be in less serious condition. "The pain from the burns has lessened thanks to the medical care we received; the medications, ointments, and burn cleanings have been essential. We have improved because of that," he stated.

Hermes Rojas Campos, 52, with 24% of his body burned, thanked the doctors who have been by his side. "Thanks to God, many of us have improved," he said.

Dr. Izaguirre Hernández explained that Aguilar Sabina "is a young patient who should not face difficulties and will likely recover tomorrow." Regarding Rojas Campos and Francisco Díaz Urquiza, 60, who is in very serious condition with 24% burns, she mentioned that both are stable despite their severity. "We have not encountered any complications; they are receiving their treatment, and today we started the third-day treatment with all necessary measures," she added.

The specialist also revealed that coworkers of the four patients donated blood to the hospital's blood bank for them. "We have needed some blood products, but the response from the coworkers has been excellent, and the patients are aware of it, which has made them very happy," she emphasized.

In addition to these three injured, a fourth worker, Dionel Figueroa Calunga, remains in critical condition with 70% burns. On the other hand, a fifth injured worker, Alexei Aguilar Valdes, 53, who had 5% burns, was discharged on Wednesday after receiving treatment.

The accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when an explosion at the Carlos Marx Cement Factory in Cienfuegos resulted in one fatality, five injuries, and three workers trapped, presumably due to the explosion causing a hopper to collapse and trap them until firefighters rescued them.

The deceased was identified as Raymundo Narciso Sarría, 61, an electrician at the Ingenious Construction Company No. 6 (Ecoing-6).
