The driver of a tourist rental car lost control and ended up crashing into two poles in Ciego de Ávila, causing significant damage to the vehicle's bodywork. The accident occurred this Monday on the Central Highway of Cuba, near the city's entrance, as reported by social media users. Apparently, the crash resulted in injuries to the vehicle's occupants, requiring hospital care, but this has not been confirmed by authorities or official media.

"Accident at the entrance of Ciego de Ávila. The rear tire of the 'tour' exploded, and he lost control," reported a user in the Facebook group 'Revolico Ciego de Ávila.' Images shared in the post showed the destruction of the vehicle's bodywork, which appears to be a Peugeot sedan with license plate T 031 649.

"He was going 120 km/h. I was there. First, he hit a concrete post and then the one in the photos. The tires were new according to those present; the explanation was something else on the road," commented another user in the Facebook group, where others attributed the accident to a tire blowout.

There were also conflicting reports about the occupants' health status. While many claimed the driver had died, a user identified as Cosi Flow stated, "People, there are no victims. The man is in the hospital being treated, please." However, Modesto Fernández Ramos identified someone named "Víctor Manuel, alias Pocholo," as a victim, while Alián Díaz said, "The driver arrived alive at the hospital but died minutes later."

Other users raised concerns about the area where the accident happened, which hosts at least two educational centers. They expressed alarm over the incident, especially now that the school year is starting, and criticized drivers who do not adhere to the speed limits in these urban areas.

Background on Transtur's Vehicle Fleet

In late November 2019, the transportation company Transtur, under the Cuban Ministry of Tourism, announced on its Facebook profile the arrival of 368 Peugeot 301 vehicles for tourist rentals. This addition complemented another 365 cars of the same make and model that had previously arrived to "refresh the fleet" of the company.

Despite the state company's significant investment, tourist rental cars are among those with the highest accident rates on the island. This is partly due to the poor condition of the roads and the lethal combination of high speeds and alcohol consumption.

The announcement of these acquisitions using public funds has generated discontent among a population suffering from the collapse and lack of investment in essential sectors such as health and education.
