More than 11,000 Cuban citizens have filed for asylum in Mexico during 2024, according to data released this Tuesday by the country’s Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR). On the social media platform X, COMAR shared the figures, revealing that those born on the island make up the second-largest group of applicants, with 11,052 requests, only surpassed by Hondurans, who recorded 21,529 applications.

The number is on the rise, as between January and July, 9,914 Cubans in irregular situations sought protection from local authorities during their journey towards the United States. COMAR did not provide information on the number of resolved cases or those that received a positive response.

A total of 15,645 Cubans entered the U.S. during the month of July, according to the latest figures revealed by the Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Out of this total, 10,509 crossed through the Mexican border. This figure represents a slight decrease compared to June, when 17,563 entered the country, marking the lowest entry recorded in the first nine months of the fiscal year 2024 (since October 1), which at that time totaled 131,612, a pace that should exceed the 142,352 entries of 2023.

According to the latest figures revealed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), during the year 2023, more than 300,000 Cubans applied for asylum in various parts of the world. This data marked a significant increase compared to previous years and reveals a rising trend in the migratory flow of those born on the island, reported the independent media ElTOQUE.
