Wednesday, September 4, 2024 by Isabella Rojas

Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, Cuba's Minister of Transport, provided specifics on Tuesday during the Mesa Redonda program regarding the importation of vehicles by Cubans on foreign missions.

According to the minister, Cubans working abroad in state missions, including diplomats, businesspeople, and collaborators, among others, will be able to import—like the rest of the population—mopeds and motorcycles with internal combustion or hybrid engines, with or without sidecars, whether new or used (up to 10 years old), with engine capacities up to 250cc, as well as electric or hybrid tricycles with capacities exceeding two seats or for cargo. These can be imported as unaccompanied luggage or as shipments.

"These individuals will also be able to import mopeds and motorcycles with internal combustion engines just like anyone else," Rodríguez Dávila specified, "but additionally, they may directly import an economical or mid-range car, new or used up to 10 years old from the date of manufacture, paying the tariffs in convertible currency."

New Requirements for Vehicle Importation

A novel aspect of the policy is that to import a vehicle, the buyer must have completed two continuous years on a mission; previously, a three-year term was mandatory.

"Officials will also have the option to purchase a car in Cuba instead of importing one from abroad. In such cases, they will be exempted from paying 100% of the special tax," clarified Rodríguez Dávila.
