Social media users have recently expressed sorrow over the passing of Reyna Lobaina Rodríguez, one of the most iconic figures in Santiago de Cuba's culinary scene, affectionately known as the “elder lady of La Fontana.”

A vintage photograph posted in the Facebook group “Fotos Antiguas, Provincia, Santiago de Cuba,” prompted several users to comment that Reyna had passed away some time ago, reminding everyone of her dedication to her work. Mirtha Flanders remarked, “Legendary, active, respectful, devoted, skilled in her performance at the irreplaceable Fontana di Trevi.”

Isabel Maurelo added, “Fond memories of Reyna. I used to visit La Fontana with my parents as a child. She was an exemplary employee, very quick and with a great character. May perpetual light shine upon her, rest in peace.” Meanwhile, Jordy Lefebre noted, “She passed away about 3 months ago.”

For many, Reyna was the most famous gastronomic figure in Santiago de Cuba. For nearly 60 years, she dedicated herself to her craft in a city now notorious for poor service in both state and private establishments.

Reyna's Legacy at La Fontana Di Trevi

Reyna began working at the iconic pizzeria La Fontana Di Trevi in the Corredor Patrimonial Las Enramadas from its inauguration on July 26, 1964. She was a server at a place that was once renowned as an excellent dining spot, now looked upon fondly by many.

Over the years, the names “La Fontana” and “Reyna” became synonymous in the minds of several generations of Santiago residents. Despite her frail appearance, it was always astonishing to see her carrying heavy trays filled with pizzas, pastas, and up to 30 beers. This was one of the traits that made her famous, along with her consistently good service, which many say never wavered even when she faced illnesses or personal problems.

What amazed many was that Reyna, even at over 80 years old, continued to work at the place she helped open, carrying heavy trays with the same agility that made her a legend.

In 2019, she gave an interview to CiberCuba, lamenting that despite over eight decades of life and more than 55 years of service to the Cuban regime, she never achieved her dream of owning her own home.

At her home, Reyna kept all the journalistic works featuring her, including those by local television. However, she expressed regret over losing old photos showing her working in the microbrigade, spending hard hours to secure her home.

“At 82 years old, I continue to work because I want to have my own house, and the whole world knows that,” she stated emphatically in the 2019 interview.
