A public transportation driver in Havana demonstrated an act of humanity and solidarity with a passenger who fainted during the journey.
On Friday morning, a bus on route P11 was making its usual rounds along the Calzada de Diez de Octubre when a young woman collapsed in the crowded aisle. The driver and his assistant decided to take her to the nearest health center, transporting her to the National Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery.
"Both of them acted quickly and responsibly, considering all the passengers on board," recounted a witness on the Facebook wall of official journalist Lisandra Martín.
However, upon arriving at the institution, the staff refused to admit her because, according to an employee, they only treat scheduled patients. The man directed them to the nearest polyclinic, which was two blocks away and required the bus to detour through Santa Catalina.
"The driver's assistant raised his voice out of human concern, and with the help of two passengers, they carried the girl into the facility as the staff refused to assist her with a stretcher," detailed Eider Matos, the author of the post, who felt such indignation that he couldn't bear to watch anymore.
"It's disgraceful what sometimes happens among Cubans themselves; it's undignified and inhumane. My recognition goes to the morning crew of P9 B160722 (I personally acknowledged the driver). And to those who refused to promptly assist the girl, I offer forgiveness and the compassion they need," Matos concluded.
Numerous internet users have praised the P11 crew and criticized the medical center's staff.
"It's sad that things like this happen due to a lack of empathy and bureaucratic regulations. Providing first aid is vital to saving lives, and then the case can be referred to the appropriate place," said a dentist.
"There are some people and places here that think they are the center of the universe. At that same clinic, if you don't have someone to put you there, you can't get in. Isn't everything supposed to be for the people?" questioned a mother.
"How did that dreadful episode end? I get treated there, and it's true they don't have an emergency room, but I doubt the rejection came from a doctor. I suppose it was the work of one of those SVPs who can't tell a bomb from a melon," said a man.
