Sunday, September 8, 2024 by Mia Dominguez

Dozens of Cubans joined the procession of the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre this Saturday, moving through the streets of El Vedado in the Plaza de la Revolución municipality of Havana. The journey began at the Parish of San Juan de Letrán at 19th Street and J, and extended to the Church of the Sacred Heart at Línea and D. Attendees had to endure a heavy downpour along the way, as evidenced by images shared by Cubanet.

Once the procession concluded, a mass was held at the Sacred Heart Parish. History recounts that the image of the Virgin of Charity appeared in Nipe Bay between 1604 and 1613. The most famous version of the story tells of three slaves from the open-pit mine in El Cobre who found the statue in the sea and brought it to the village where it is venerated today at its Sanctuary.

On May 10, 1916, Pope Benedict XV proclaimed the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre as the Patroness of Cuba. This devotion to Mary, Mother of God, is known by various names such as Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre, the Mother of Cuba, the Virgin Mambisa, the Patroness of Cubans, Cachita, Oshún, the Queen of Fresh Water, among others.

No matter what she is called, for millions of Cubans, this virgin is more than just words or a beautiful image in a church. She represents a genuine sense of love, devotion, and faith that is deeply rooted in a shared identity. In Cuban religious tradition, marked by syncretism, the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre is also venerated as the Yoruba goddess Oshún.
