Cubans in Valencia, Spain Honor Our Lady of Charity

Sunday, September 8, 2024 by Daniel Vasquez

Cubans residing in Valencia, Spain, joined in the jubilation this Sunday for the Day of Our Lady of Charity, showing deep devotion to the holy image regarded as the Patroness of Cuba. The priest who officiated the mass at San Miguel de Soternes Parish, dedicated to Our Lady of Charity, remarked that the regime in Cuba "seeks to perpetuate itself in power, and through its policies, stifles the thirst for freedom and progress of the majority."

He underscored the importance of building a society free from exclusion and violence, where people are not discriminated against based on their religion, race, political orientation, or gender. The priest prayed for God's continuous love and gaze upon Cuba, asking for the protection of the island and its people.

In his prayer, he also referenced the suffering of those born on the island, highlighting the difficult situation faced by thousands in Cuba, mentioning "Cubans who suffer, the thousands of sick who lack medication," and those who, due to scarcity, "are lighting the stove only once a day." He emphasized the plight of those persecuted for their ideas, facing intimidation, control, and repression.

The priest extended his plea to include not just Cuba, but also other countries like Nicaragua and Venezuela, and nations embroiled in conflicts, acknowledging that pain persists and that the desperate search for peace and freedom is a constant struggle for many worldwide.

Additionally, he stressed the ample reasons to ask Our Lady of Charity to intercede for the people, highlighting the importance of faith during these difficult times. During his address, he mentioned the thousands of immigrants fleeing their homelands, driven by the terror of war or economic hardships, emphasizing the tough situation these individuals face, forced to leave their homes in search of a better life, including Cubans.

The priest also spoke to the youth who, without employment and facing an uncertain future, must survive far from their homes, recalling the challenges the new generations face in an increasingly adverse context.

"Let's promise the Virgin tonight that we will not give up, that we will not get discouraged. We will continue fighting and remain in solidarity with our brothers in Cuba," he stated. He also mentioned that everyone present must not allow "anything or anyone to take away our joy or peace because nothing or no one deserves that we give it up."

As every September 8, thousands of Cubans paid homage to Our Lady of Charity, venerated as the Patroness of Cuba in the Catholic Church. People from various provinces of Cuba and other countries gathered in El Cobre, in Santiago de Cuba, to participate in the procession dedicated to the Marian devotion.

The news portal CubaNet shared a video on Facebook this Sunday showing the massive congregation walking through the streets of El Cobre and following the image of Our Lady of Charity. The jubilee for the Patroness of Cuba extended to various localities across the country.

In Havana, dozens of Cubans joined the procession of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre that walked through the streets of El Vedado, in the Plaza de la Revolución municipality. The procession, which began at the Parish of San Juan de Letrán on 19th and J streets, extended to the Church of the Sacred Heart on Línea and D streets.
