Cuban Woman in Italy Defends Her Heritage: "My Country Has Its Challenges, But It's Beautiful"

Monday, September 9, 2024 by Samantha Mendoza

The Cuban national @marthalayanza shared a video on TikTok addressing fellow expatriates who deny their nationality or adopt a new accent after moving to other countries. "It pains me when I hear a Cuban say, 'Oh, I don't speak Spanish because I've picked up the accent'; 'Oh, I don't say I'm from Cuba because I'm embarrassed,'" she expressed.

She emphasized that although she lives in Italy and is very grateful for the opportunities she has received there, she proudly embraces her Cuban identity. “I love being Cuban. I love and proudly say everywhere: 'Marta the Cuban has arrived,' I boast about it,” she added, stressing that despite her homeland's challenges, she still loves her native land.

"I live it because I love my beloved Cuba... I love it, I know it has many difficulties, but my country is beautiful and I love it," she concluded in her video, which has resonated with many compatriots and Latinos living abroad. Comments flooded in support of her viewpoint:

"Here in Spain, they haven't been here for 15 days and they're already speaking with a lisp... you're absolutely right. Shine on, Cuban, and always be yourself"; "I've been married to an Italian for 26 years and we live in Denmark... but I'm proud to be Cuban"; “I've been in Italy for 28 years and haven't lost my accent, trying to act... 100% Cuban,” shared a follower; "Those who deny their roots are lost in the world," commented another user.

However, not all comments agreed with her sentiment:

"I say I'm Argentine because here in Italy, Cubans are still hustling... those in Italy are of a very low level"; "I left Cuba when I was 5 years old, I'm 30 now, yes I speak Spanish but I can't say I love Cuba because I don't feel it"; "That happens when you've been away from your country for years with another language and no Latinos to talk to, but I'm proud to be Cuban"; "Cuba hasn't given me anything, I've been in Italy for 23 years, I speak Italian and Spanish when I want, it's not that I forget, it's that I'm in Italy"; "Girl, we are in a democratic country and everyone thinks in their own way, I'm Cuban and I live here but from a distance, that country didn't give me anything, sure I'll be Cuban for life but everyone to their own," others opined.
