American Airlines, the U.S. airline with the most flights to Cuba, has revised its carry-on baggage policy in line with new regulations that took effect in the European Union on September 1. The airline detailed these new rules for cabin luggage on its website.

Passengers flying with American Airlines are allowed one personal item and one carry-on bag. The personal item must measure 45 x 35 x 20 centimeters and fit under the seat in front. The following items do not count toward this limit:

- Diaper bags (one per child)
- Breast pump
- Soft cooler for breast milk
- Child safety seats, strollers, and mobility aids

The carry-on bag must have total dimensions, including handles and wheels, not exceeding 56 x 36 x 23 centimeters. It must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat. If not, it must be checked and placed in the cargo hold.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) enforce restrictions on transporting several common items. Failing to declare these items violates U.S. Federal Law, which can result in up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Prohibited Items on EU Flights

On flights to the European Union, certain animal products like meats, cheeses, and sausages are prohibited. Additionally, the following items are banned on flights worldwide:

- Alcoholic beverages with more than 70% alcohol by volume
- Alcoholic beverages with less than 70% alcohol by volume
- Batteries: allowed in carry-on, but not car batteries
- Sharp instruments (knives, razors): allowed in checked baggage only
- Personal defense sprays
- Drones
- Dry ice
- E-cigarettes: allowed in carry-on, but cannot be used onboard
- Explosives
- Firearms or ammunition
- Flammable liquids or solids
- Gasoline-powered tools
- Household items like solvents, aerosols, and insecticides
- Electric scooters
- Lighters and matches
- Personal care items: one of each (e.g., perfume, nail polish), in small containers within a one-liter bag
- Pressurized containers or compressed gases
- Samsung Galaxy Note 7
- Self-heating meals
- Life vests
- Scissors
- Smart bags: allowed as carry-on if the battery is removable. If checked, the battery must be removed and carried separately.
- Stun guns

Last year, American Airlines updated its checked baggage fees for flights to Cuba. The new baggage policy includes a new fee for economy class luggage and an increased cost for transoceanic and transatlantic connections.

American Airlines operates several flights from Miami International Airport to Cuba, including eight daily flights to Havana. It also connects to airports in Varadero, Santa Clara, Camagüey, and Santiago de Cuba.
