A group of children, along with volunteers passionate about the environment, gathered this Sunday at La Concha Beach, west of Havana, for a cleanup day during which they managed to collect approximately 220 pounds of waste.

Organized Effort for a Cleaner Beach

The initiative Naturaleza Secreta explained through its Facebook page that during a recent cleanup event, they collected 20 black bags of non-recyclable waste and three sacks of bottles that were recycled. The event was organized by the Oasis Project and included participation from several organizations such as La Tribu, which provided music; Cuba Libro Havana, which donated bags, gloves, and books for the children; and the Caballeros del Mar Diving Club.

Additionally, the Antonio Núñez Jiménez Foundation and the Norwegian Embassy participated by donating sacks and bags for the garbage. Other contributors included the aCOSTAo project, the Red Verde network, and Naturaleza Secreta.

The event focused not only on beach cleanup but also on educating children about the importance of protecting the environment and marine ecosystems. Activities aimed to promote the value of reducing, reusing, and recycling through awareness campaigns.

"Every small effort counts, and together we can make a big difference," stated the project organizers.

Initiatives like these are not new in Cuba's marine ecosystems, where continuous efforts have been made to collect waste and encourage good environmental practices. Last July, a group of diving enthusiasts submerged themselves in the waters of Siboney Beach in Santiago de Cuba to remove objects that could cause injuries to swimmers.

Aris Batalla, a representative of the Red Cross in Santiago de Cuba, reported on Facebook that a group composed of lifeguards, rescuers, and firefighters extracted cans, whole and broken bottles, and other objects from the seabed that could cause injuries to bathers.
