Cuban actor Omar Alí has just completed filming scenes for the movie "El Camino" in Madrid. Omar, known for his role as a Ministry of the Interior officer in the series "Tras la Huella," stepped behind the camera to direct a film based on a script by his daughter, Daniela Alí Pérez. His wife, actress Iris Pérez, served as the actors' coach.
The movie is a television feature co-produced by ICAIC, the Cubavisión channel, and the Cuban production company i4_films. It consists of seven short stories, each between 10 and 12 minutes, set in different historical periods.
Seven Stories of Bravery and History
"These are seven stories dedicated to the youth, the brave ones who have played honorable roles in our history, from the mambises to the present. The stories are interconnected, and some characters reappear in different times throughout the feature," Iris Pérez explained to the Cuban television portal.
"Despite the seven stories being sensorially different, with distinct dramatic forms, the team aims for a formal coherence in the feature," she clarified.
The film features around 28 characters, with eight leading roles played by Milton García, Andro Perugorría, Roberto Romero, Abel Molina, Eugenio Torroella, Daniela Leyva, Amalia Gaute, and Juannalise Ricardo. Additional cast members include Carlos Busto, David Pereira, Lola Amores, Miriam Alameda, Roberto Perdomo, José Ignacio León, Doimeadiós, Mario Guerra, Patricio Wood, and Fernando Hechavarría, among others.
Omar Alí has previously directed for television, including several episodes of "Tras la Huella," documentaries, the telefilms "Trigo Verde" and "Decisiones," and co-directed the comedic show "Vivir del Cuento."
Recently, Omar faced criticism for his remarks in an interview where he stated that freedom is personal, that he can be as free as he wants, and that freedom is not linked to politics.
"I think freedom, first of all, is individual, it's personal, and one is as free as they wish to be. It's a big word, very manipulated," he told actress Maikel Amelia on the show "Cara a Cara" from the YouTube channel La Familia Cubana.
"One is free when they can do and feel what they want to do and feel," the actor emphasized, adding that freedom "has nothing to do with politics" but with oneself.
"Freedom is personal, and there is a tendency in the world not to respect personal freedoms because I don't have to think like anyone else. I think the way I think, and all I want is for you to respect that opinion," he reiterated.
