The intellectual Alina Bárbara López Hernández has been expelled from the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), as she announced on her social media platforms.
"I am certain that the 'combat order' from UNEAC was decided at higher levels. To those levels, I clarify something important: I will continue to be an intellectual, a citizen, and a dignified Cuban even outside of this organization that has long dishonored itself," said López on Facebook.
The decision was communicated to her during a meeting with the provincial directive of UNEAC in Matanzas. The academic had no opportunity to appeal.
UNEAC accused the professor of engaging in "activities against the revolution," showing solidarity with the July 11th movement, and publishing content critical of political leaders, particularly on websites like La Joven Cuba and CubaxCuba.
During the meeting, López Hernández was denied access to a copy of the official document justifying the sanction, which she considered an act of "cowardice" by UNEAC.
The intellectual stated that this measure seems to be motivated more by pressure from the State Security than by the opinions of artists or writers.
She reiterated that her analyses have always been objective and based on her work as an essayist and historian.
Despite the expulsion imposed by UNEAC, López Hernández will continue to exercise her right to freedom of expression in Cuba and maintain her critical stance outside of the organization.
