Wampi Stands Firm: "I Owe Nothing to Chocolate MC for My Career"

Friday, September 13, 2024 by Emily Vargas

Although Chocolate MC claims that the new exponents of Cuba's urban genre are "his children," or "Chocolaticos," who owe their music careers to him, Wampi strongly disagrees with this notion. In an interview with Chunguito Podcast, the young reggaeton artist made it clear that he doesn't owe his success to Chocolate MC: "First of all, he hasn't written a single one of my songs. Secondly, he hasn't produced any of my tracks, nor has he been involved in any of my strategies. He hasn't done anything."

"I have a lot of respect for him despite his issues and problems. I'm empathetic towards him because I know he has suffered a lot, but honestly, I don't owe him anything. I don't think the new generation owes him either, because the music being made today is completely different from what was made years ago," Wampi added.

Wampi's Perspective on Chocolate MC's Influence

"My music has nothing to do with his, no offense," Wampi stated. Despite this viewpoint, he acknowledges the role that Chocolate MC has played within the reparto genre: "I can't deny that he was the one who popularized reparto across Cuba and even parts of the world."

Recently, tensions within the genre have been high. Chocolate MC and Harryson have exchanged a series of jabs on social media, and El Carli also took shots at Wow Popy.
