Cuban Immigrant in Orlando Reflects on Challenges: "Not Everyone Has the Same Luck"

Sunday, September 15, 2024 by Charlotte Gomez

Life doesn't always smile upon those who decide to emigrate. For many, leaving Cuba is just the beginning of their challenges. However, this doesn't mean their determination to succeed diminishes. Through her TikTok account, Daiana Díaz, a Cuban worker, discusses the obstacles many immigrants face during their initial years in the United States and responds to those who suggest starting their own business as a solution.

"How can one open a company with almost two years in Orlando, Florida, earning minimum wage? How do you save money? How do you manage without documents for the first year and a half? That's why I say not everyone has the same luck, and sometimes we can't judge because everyone's destiny is different," she says in one of her videos on this social media platform.

Daiana also pointed out that experiences can vary significantly when there are children to support or sick parents in Cuba to assist—a harsh reality for many Cubans who leave their loved ones behind.

"With a minimum wage, you pay for everything you need in this country because that's how it is here; it's a massive consumer society, and there's nothing left," she asserted. However, she acknowledges that studying English can make a significant difference when it comes to job hunting.

"Not everyone can do well because everyone is different," she emphasizes. While she notes that not everyone can start their own business in the United States, she acknowledges it is not impossible: "Everyone wants to have their own business, but it's not easy."

Many of her followers agreed with her sentiments, but most recommend that she keep working hard because the first few years are the toughest, but the rewards eventually come.
