The Collier County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) in southwest Florida has detained two Miami residents, both of Cuban descent, allegedly connected to an organized group responsible for a series of large-scale retail thefts across the state.
Last Wednesday, police officers arrested Carlos M. García Ajete, 40, and Nivaldo J. García Vento, 41, after discovering thousands of dollars worth of allegedly stolen merchandise in their vehicle, according to a CCSO statement.
Authorities suspect the detainees are members of a criminal gang that has been targeting major retail stores throughout the state, including Publix, Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, and Winn Dixie.
CCSO received information that both suspects were involved in a recent spree of large-scale thefts in Martin County and may have traveled to Collier County to commit similar crimes.
Details of the Arrest
At approximately 2 p.m. last Wednesday, officers identified a vehicle leaving the Walmart at 6650 Collier Blvd. that matched the description of a brown GMC SUV believed to be used by the pair. According to the statement, the driver, later identified as García Vento, ran a red light, prompting a traffic stop. Upon stopping the SUV, García Ajete fled on foot but was apprehended after a brief chase.
The report notes that the pair claimed they were coming from Fort Myers. However, suspecting their story was false and that they had just stolen from Walmart, officers reviewed the store's security footage. The video showed García Vento in the personal care section of the store, taking a package of Gillette razors, hiding it in his clothing, and leaving without paying.
During the vehicle search, police found six large bags filled with allegedly stolen merchandise: 400 deodorant sticks, razor blades and razors, fishing gear, cosmetics, and other items valued at around $5,000. Additionally, a device commonly used to deactivate security sensors was discovered. The suspects told authorities they had no purchase receipts for any of the products.
Both men face multiple felony charges, including grand theft. García Vento had a prior criminal record and was out on bail for retail theft charges in Palm Beach County.
"Retail theft is a serious issue in Florida. These individuals will now have to answer for their criminal actions, not only in Collier County but also in other jurisdictions," said Sheriff Kevin Rambosk.
