Young Cuban Celebrates 9 Years in the U.S.: "A New Person Was Born the Moment I Stepped into Miami Airport"

Monday, September 16, 2024 by Aaron Delgado

A young Cuban woman celebrated her ninth anniversary of arriving in the United States on her TikTok profile (@mrs_wong1), sharing an emotional message about her adaptation process and the challenges she has faced as an immigrant during this time. "Today marks 9 years since I was reborn because that’s how I feel since the day I arrived in this country," expressed the young woman named Gaby, who came to Miami at just 16 years old.

Gaby recounted her experience of arriving in a completely new country, without knowing the language and without any family support. "These have been the 9 hardest years of my life. Imagine arriving in a completely new country, without family, and starting from scratch," she commented. Despite the challenges, she has managed to move forward thanks to her perseverance, working in two or three places at once to achieve her goals. "Like any other immigrant, I had to reinvent myself many times, start from zero, have 2 or 3 jobs at once, and go months without rest between school and work. I was doing both full-time to secure a better future," she said.

Over the years, she also faced personal disappointments from friends and family. However, she highlighted the support she received from people who, despite not being family, extended a helping hand during the most difficult moments. "I formed my family, the one I always wanted to have. And most importantly, I had my daughters in this wonderful country. A country from which they won’t have to emigrate to have a better future, but most importantly, with the hope of being free. Unfortunately, in our country, freedom does not exist," she concluded in her message.

This message reflects not only Gaby's personal struggle but also the reality faced by many Cuban immigrants who come to the United States in search of new opportunities and freedom.
