Father of Leukemia-Stricken Child Condemns Government for Politicizing His Son's Case: "Stop Blaming Others for Your Inefficiencies"

Tuesday, September 17, 2024 by Daniel Colon

The father of Cuban child Jorge Esteban Reina Llerena, who suffers from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, has criticized the government for publicizing his son's story in official media and accused them of distorting the facts.

Jorge Reina Pallarols shared a post on his Facebook profile, calling the actions of government officials "disgusting" in response to the efforts he has undertaken to save his son's life.

"It is shameful to see that the authorities in Cuba have given a political spin to every effort for a chance at life. It is beyond contemptible to politically link my son Jorgito's case with the so-called blockade, which is more accurately an embargo, and not the cause of the shortages and needs that the people are suffering from today," he asserted.

Jorge emphasized that his son's situation has nothing to do with the "blockade" but is purely a health issue.

Calls for an End to Manipulation

"Enough with the manipulation and distortion of what is actually being said," he demanded, accusing the authorities of daring to "publicize" something without the parents' consent. "Stop blaming others for all of your inefficiencies," he underlined.

The father of Jorgito expressed gratitude to the government for echoing his concerns but insisted that they should not politicize the issue, which has never been his intention.

"Since my son was diagnosed with leukemia, we trusted the Cuban standards and protocols. That trust persisted even after his first relapse, until a second relapse forced us to seek international treatment options, as the Cuban options offered a very low success rate and could not provide the only lifesaving treatment available: a bone marrow transplant," he recalled.

"We never expressed our pain or discontent; we always sought options, which were made available to us in this great North American nation that has opened its doors to over two and a half million Cubans, welcoming them as its own," he concluded.
