Tuesday, September 17, 2024 by Grace Ramos

Juan Antonio Hernández Hernández, a retired brigadier general of Cuba's Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR), passed away on Monday, according to the Cuban Television News.

Hernández, who had an extensive military career in the country, was notable for his involvement in various missions and responsibilities within the FAR, particularly in the Youth Labor Army (EJT). The EJT's notorious brigades are remembered by many Cubans who were punished or forced into grueling agricultural tasks as part of their military service.

Hernández Hernández joined revolutionary activities at a young age, participating in the Association of Rebel Youth and the 1961 Literacy Campaign. He later entered the General Military Service, where he began a career that would see him occupy various positions in the Armed Forces. One of his early roles was as an artillery platoon leader, quickly standing out for his leadership abilities.

In 1973, when the Youth Labor Army was established, Hernández was appointed as the head of the Transportation and Armament Section in Camagüey, taking on logistical and strategic tasks within this military force dedicated to productive labor.

In 1988, his career took a turn when he was named the head of the Political Section of the EJT, and six years later, he assumed the role of Chief of Staff for the same institution.

Throughout his career, Hernández was decorated with several honors, including the Literacy Medal and the Ignacio Agramonte medals in three classes. He also participated in congresses of the Communist Party of Cuba and the Union of Young Communists, cementing his figure in the Cuban political-military sphere.

Hernández's death adds to the recent passing of other high-ranking military officials in Cuba, such as generals Juan Israel Cervantes and Romárico Sotomayor García, who also held prominent roles within the FAR.

In late September 2019, exactly five years ago, the retired Army Corps General Rigoberto García Fernández, who served as the head of the EJT for more than 20 years, passed away in Havana.
