Priest Distributes Bread in Rural Santiago de Cuba: "We Bring Joy to Endure This Hard Life"

The Catholic priest Leandro NaunHung distributed bread during a Sunday mass in a rural area of Santiago de Cuba, emphasizing this act as a way to share joy and endure the harsh reality faced by Cubans.

In a video posted on Facebook, NaunHung conveyed a message of hope and solidarity while handing out bread: “We bring you a gift, we bring you bread,” said the priest, highlighting that in the midst of the crisis affecting so many families, sharing food is a way to bring joy.

“Now that bread comes so small, and whether it comes or not, or will come someday due to so much crisis,” he added, stressing that celebrating mass is a reason for joy and strengthening of faith, especially in times of great hardship, like now, when people tend to turn to religion.

NaunHung underscored the importance of solidarity during difficult times, mentioning that food, like the bread he distributed, is meant to be shared: "A party without food, what is it?"

In this context, he recalled the effort of a parishioner, Margot, who prepared a stew with the few resources available, noting that “the Lord’s day should not be overlooked,” even amidst scarcity.

With this gesture, the priest not only offered physical nourishment but also a message of spiritual strength to withstand the harsh reality faced by many families in the region.

Recently, NaunHung shared a video showing the raw reality of a family in the mountainous area of Santiago de Cuba, surviving, among other ways, by cooking stews with purslane. According to the Catholic priest, the mother prepared what he called a “survival recipe.”
